According to Reuters, citing an Israeli official, Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new Supreme Leader, was likely lightly injured during the opening strikes of the war, which may explain why he has not appeared publicly since the attacks.

Separate reporting by CNN indicates he may have suffered trauma to one eye, facial cuts, and a broken foot during the first-day attack.

Despite the reports, Iranian officials say Khamenei is still alive and continuing to operate, though he has remained out of public view since being elevated to the position following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, in the February 28 strikes.

Analysts say the injuries—and security concerns—could be the main reason for his continued absence from public appearances during the ongoing conflict.
