Congress, in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), has declined to formally rename the Department of Defense and the Secretary of Defense as the “Department of War” and “Secretary of War.” Instead, lawmakers endorsed those terms only as secondary titles and left any future renaming decisions to separate votes in the House and Senate.
