According to CNN, U.S. President Donald J. Trump is facing what may be the most consequential decision of his presidency: whether to deploy large numbers of American ground troops into Iran.

Potential options under consideration reportedly include operations to seize Kharg Island and secure the Strait of Hormuz, as well as missions deep inside Iranian territory aimed at securing highly enriched uranium from nuclear facilities.

The prospect of a major ground deployment is raising concern among many of Trump’s allies in Washington, some of whom have indicated it could mark the end of their public support for the war. It may also complicate efforts by the administration and the Pentagon to secure hundreds of billions of dollars in supplemental funding from Congress.

With economic pressures mounting and midterm elections approaching, a number of Republican lawmakers are reportedly urging the president to pursue an exit strategy from the conflict.
