Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) announced that on Saturday, October 25, it conducted an operation in Russia’s Kemerovo Oblast—more than 2,000 miles from Ukraine—that resulted in the death of Lt. Col. Veniamin Vladimirovich Mazherin, a member of the Russian National Guard’s OMON “Obereg Unit.”

Mazherin had been accused of war crimes committed near Kyiv at the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, including the killing of civilians, forced deportations, and other atrocities. Identified as part of “Obereg” in April, he was reportedly killed by a car bomb, likely planted by an agent of Ukraine’s special services operating inside Russia.
