German Chancellor confirmed this evening that Germany has formally requested the United Nations to initiate the snapback mechanism against Iran, set to take effect on July 15.
The snapback mechanism, part of a UN Security Council resolution tied to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), enables any signatory nation to reimpose all previously lifted international sanctions if Iran is found to be in serious breach of the agreement.
If approved, the move would restore the full range of sanctions lifted under the JCPOA — including the arms embargo, economic and space-related restrictions, and Iran’s access to the global financial system.
