Sir Ken McCallum, Director General of the Security Service (MI5), expressed frustration today over prosecutors’ failure last month to bring several British citizens accused of spying for China to trial, vowing that he would “never back off” from confronting threats from Beijing — which he described as posing a national security danger to the United Kingdom “every day.”
McCallum revealed that MI5 had disrupted a Chinese intelligence operation just last week, though it is understood that the plot did not involve Parliament. He also noted that the number of individuals under investigation for state-linked threats has risen by 35% in 2025.
