In a statement earlier today, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said that the Israel Defense Forces carried out a series of strikes on Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, which resulted in the deaths of approximately two dozen civilians, including journalists and rescue workers, in what appeared to be a “double tap” attack by the Israeli Air Force.
The full transcript of the statement reads:
“Earlier today, IDF forces conducted a strike in the area of Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. We are aware of reports indicating harm to civilians, including journalists. Let me be clear: the IDF does not intentionally target civilians. Every effort is made to mitigate civilian harm while ensuring the safety of our troops. Any incident raising concern is addressed through the appropriate IDF mechanisms.”
“We operate in an extremely complex environment. Hamas terrorists deliberately use civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, as shields, and have even operated from Nasser Hospital itself. Hamas initiated this war, created impossible combat conditions, and continues to prevent its resolution by holding 50 hostages.”
“That said, as a professional military committed to international law, we are obligated to investigate our operations thoroughly. The Chief of the General Staff has ordered an immediate inquiry to determine the circumstances of what occurred. Reporting from an active warzone carries significant risk, especially in a conflict with a terrorist organization like Hamas, which cynically uses civilians as shields. As always, we will present our findings as transparently as possible. We regret any harm to uninvolved individuals and remain committed to fighting Hamas while taking all necessary precautions.”
