Speaking today before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the surprising claim that the Syrian government is “weeks away from potential collapse and a full-scale civil war of epic proportions.” However, there appears to be little evidence supporting such a scenario. In fact, most factions—including the Kurds and Druze—despite some disagreements with the central government, are closer to unity than at any point in recent decades. Current concerns over stability largely stem from isolated terror attacks carried out by Assadist remnants and ISIS, rather than signs of imminent national collapse.
