The UN is considering removing the "terrorist" designation applied to the HTS group, which led the offensive that overthrew Bashar al-Assad's dictatorship in Syria. HTS, formerly known as Al-Nusra, was the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda, the same group responsible for killing nearly 3,000 American citizens in multiple terrorist attacks in the U.S. in September 2001. In 2004, Al-Qaeda killed 191 people in Madrid, and in 2005, 51 people were killed in London.
The UN stated that now, with HTS taking control of at least part of Syria, its designation as "terrorist" could be reassessed, but this will depend on its actions on the ground.
According to the UN, the group needs to demonstrate that it will be more... "inclusive."
