Earlier tonight on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced he had directed the Bureau of Prisons—alongside the DOJ, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security—to reopen, expand, and modernize the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary to detain “America’s most ruthless and violent offenders.”
However, beyond the enormous cost and logistical hurdles such a project would entail, Alcatraz is not under the jurisdiction of any of these agencies. The island is managed by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, established by Congress.
