The Israeli government is weighing the annexation of parts of the West Bank in response to the expected recognition of a Palestinian state by several countries, including Australia, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom, according to Israeli, U.S., and European officials who spoke with Axios.

Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar have reportedly warned European counterparts that Israel could move forward with annexation if recognition proceeds. Dermer is said to have told French officials that Israel would annex all of “Area C,” which makes up about 60% of the West Bank.

Such a step would likely trigger international backlash and deepen Israel’s isolation—even among close allies. U.S. President Donald J. Trump is not expected to support the move; during his first term, he blocked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu twice from pursuing annexation.
