A drilling rig has collapsed in Russia’s Siberia, where a fire broke out at the site overnight. Russian media report that the blaze is ongoing, with two 25-meter-high flames still burning. Three individuals were injured and are currently in critical condition in intensive care.
Kharapurneftegaz in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO), managed by Belorusneft-Sibir, contributes to the region’s annual output of 2.3 million barrels of oil equivalent. According to Novatek’s 2019 data, YNAO contains 80% of Russia’s natural gas reserves and 15% of the world’s. In 2020, the Yamal region accounted for over 20% of Russia’s gas production—a figure projected to rise to 40% by 2030. It supplies key pipelines, including Yamal-Europe and Nord Stream 1.
