Just one day after Trump issued an ultimatum to NATO, laying out several conditions before moving forward with sanctions against Russia, House Speaker Mike Johnson said that both Congress and the Senate have an “appetite” to advance sanctions on Russia and are ready to work together to impose them.
It’s a rather unusual situation: Congress and the Senate, both controlled by Republicans, want to move ahead with sanctions on Russia, while the U.S. President, also a Republican, is putting up roadblocks to prevent them.
If Congress and the Senate pass sanctions on Russia and Trump vetoes them, it would create a major political rift in Washington.
