Footage has surfaced from a tuna fishing vessel boarded earlier today in international waters of the Southern Caribbean Sea by a U.S. Navy Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) team from the USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109). Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry says the vessel had official authorization from its Ministry of Fisheries to operate within the Venezuelan Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) when it was “illegally and aggressively boarded by the U.S. Navy.” According to Caracas, the nine fishermen on board were detained for eight hours before being released under Venezuelan Navy escort.
