On Thursday, Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, of attempting to overturn the 2022 presidential election in a coup plot that prosecutors say also involved plans to assassinate the president-elect. Four of the five justices voted to find him guilty on all charges, sentencing him to 27 years and three months in prison. Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a coup d’état, participating in an armed criminal organization, seeking to dismantle Brazil’s democratic order by force, carrying out violent acts against state institutions, and damaging protected public property during the January 8, 2023 storming of government buildings by his supporters.
