Mohammed Al-Jolani, leader of HTS, the group that spearheaded the offensive to overthrow Assad's dictatorship, faces a monumental challenge: transforming a faction of Al-Qaeda dissidents—composed of nationalists, terrorists, and Islamic extremists—into an organization capable of governing at least part of Syria. The task is so daunting that many believe he will fail, and Syria, or at least the area under HTS control, may become a new haven for Islamic extremism.
