Despite President Donald J. Trump’s earlier assurances this week that members of the U.S. Armed Forces would continue to be paid during the government shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) today rejected the idea of holding a stand-alone vote in the House on legislation to ensure troop pay. Johnson stated, “The job in the House is done.”

The bill, introduced by Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA), has garnered 122 bipartisan co-sponsors and would cover pay for all servicemembers, including the Coast Guard, throughout the shutdown. Since the government shutdown began, Johnson has resisted calls to reconvene the House, which last voted on September 19.
