According to Axios, Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Trump during their meeting in Anchorage yesterday that he would agree to freeze the frontline in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions of eastern Ukraine, if Ukrainian forces fully withdrew from Donetsk. This proposal is the same one European and Ukrainian leaders rejected last week, though U.S. officials have suggested Putin may be open to negotiating over Russian-occupied areas in Kharkiv and Sumy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to arrive in Washington, D.C. on Monday for talks with President Trump and senior officials regarding Friday’s meeting with Putin. In a call last night with leaders from the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Finland, NATO, the European Commission, and Zelensky himself, Trump reportedly said that following his discussion with Putin, the United States is now “more prepared than ever” to extend security guarantees to Ukraine—similar to those provided under NATO’s Article 5.
