Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly informed U.S. President Donald J. Trump on Tuesday morning that Israel planned to strike Hamas leaders in Qatar, according to three Israeli officials with direct knowledge who spoke with Axios. The call reportedly came around 8:00 a.m. EDT, about an hour before explosions were first reported in Doha at 8:51 a.m.
Israeli officials told Axios that Trump was aware of the strike in advance, first through political channels with Netanyahu and then via military communication. “Trump knew about the strike before the missiles were launched… If Trump had wanted to stop it, he could have. In practice, he didn’t,” one senior Israeli official said. Another added that the U.S. was notified “well in advance” on a political level.
However, the White House has maintained that it was only informed after the missiles were in the air, leaving Trump no opportunity to intervene. Speaking from the Oval Office tonight, Trump again denied prior knowledge, claiming he learned about the strike “the same way you did.”
U.S. and Qatari officials have suggested that the recent statements from Israeli officials may be an attempt to sow divisions between the United States and its Middle Eastern allies.
