After the coup led by Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso turned its back on France, expelling French troops who, in recent years, had cornered ISIS and Al-Qaeda forces in the north of the country. Traoré has since aligned himself with Putin and brought in Russian mercenaries. The result has been the daily loss of villages and entire towns to terrorist groups, which are now advancing and expanding further across the country.
