Earlier today on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced his intention to recommend a flat 50% tariff on all goods imported from the European Union starting June 1st, stating that trade negotiations between the U.S. and EU are “going nowhere!” The U.S. recently surpassed China to become the EU’s largest trading partner, while the EU remains the second-largest trading partner of the United States. A trade war between the two could potentially push Europe closer to China. President Trump has continued to resist increasing tariffs and sanctions on Russia, recently reduced tariffs on China to 30%, yet now plans to impose a 50% tariff and launch a trade conflict with several of America’s key NATO allies.
