The U.S. Air Force’s…

The U.S. Air Force’s 493rd Fighter Squadron, stationed at RAF Lakenheath in England and flying the F-35A Lightning II, unveiled a striking new challenge coin this week at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) held at RAF Fairford. Shaped like a nuclear mushroom cloud, the coin features the Grim Reaper clutching a skull above what appears to be a B61 thermonuclear gravity bomb, accompanied by the ominous inscription: “Prepare to meet thy maker.”

The coin’s debut comes amid reports that the U.S. Air Force recently transferred several B61-12 bombs—advanced, low-yield “tactical” nuclear weapons compatible with the F-35A—to a newly constructed nuclear weapons storage facility at RAF Fairford, further underscoring the symbolism behind the squadron’s new emblem.
