President Trump thanked El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, for accepting around 300 criminals belonging to Venezuelan gangs who were previously imprisoned in the United States.

Since Venezuela was blocking deportations and there was a risk of these criminals escaping or being released by the Chavista dictatorship, the U.S. struck a deal with El Salvador to hold them in CECOT prison until an agreement is reached with dictator Nicolás Maduro.

Bukele stated that El Salvador will receive U.S. funding to keep the criminals in CECOT, though he did not disclose the amount.

Through this agreement, Bukele aims to secure another revenue source for his ambitious plan to make El Salvador’s prison system financially self-sufficient.
