According to Libby Dean of NewsNation, the boat involved in the failed extraction attempt—intercepted by Cuban authorities—was registered to a 65-year-old Cuban-born man. After being contacted by U.S. officials, he reported the vessel stolen. The boat had been docked in the Florida Keys, and the owner is not currently considered a suspect. During the exchange of gunfire, which occurred about one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino Canal, four people were killed and seven others injured, including a member of the Cuban Border Guard.
