According to Axios, senior Israeli officials are growing concerned that Hamas may attempt to renegotiate the “keys”—the ratio of prisoners to hostages—in the ongoing ceasefire and hostage deal discussions.
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff’s original proposal outlined the release of 125 convicted Palestinian murderers and 1,111 Gazans detained after October 7 in exchange for 10 living hostages.
However, a revised proposal from Qatar this week omitted any reference to specific numbers. When questioned, Qatari mediators said the ratios would be “similar” to Witkoff’s plan but offered no concrete guarantees.
“If Hamas agrees, we’ll move into intense proximity talks over the keys. It’s going to be difficult, and a breakdown is possible,” a senior Israeli official warned.
